MARK Erecting Religious Fences
All,
This week we will handle the topic of legalism. Jesus had conflict with the Pharisees and the scribes at various points in his ministry. The reasons that they battled was because everything in them wanted to have a system of ranking and achievement. That is, every one wants to be better than the next guy or at least better than the worst guy! This is the creeping in of the old man way of thinking. But if we are now under grace, we are new men (and women) and have a different nature. We think about a relationship that is a gift, rather than a religion that we work at.
Think about this prayer quote from JD Greear:
"There is nothing I have done that could make you love me less, and nothing I could do that would make you love me more. You are all I need for everlasting joy. As you have been to me, so I will be to others. As I pray, I’ll do so according to the compassion you’ve shown at the cross and the power you demonstrated through the resurrection."
I am praying for our understanding of this key doctrine better as we study Mark.
